Happy staff still prepared to move
Companies that score highly in staff satisfaction surveys
are fooling themselves if they think this translates into staff
loyalty according to research findings released today by SEEK
Limited, Australia's leading Internet employment company (seek.com.au).
SEEK surveyed over 500 fulltime employees across Australia
aged 18 to 50 to examine their attitudes about what influences
job satisfaction, what factors lead to a change in jobs and
how employees research potential employers.
The study revealed that although 78% of respondents are satisfied
with their current jobs, only 31% are totally committed to
their current place of employment. The remaining respondents
are either actively looking for a new job (7%), thinking about
it (12%), or would consider moving if they were approached
by another company (50%).
Employee confidence shows with 68% of respondents agreeing
that ‘if my current job doesn’t work out I will have no trouble
finding another job that is suitable’, yet only 25% agreed
with the statement, ‘I would rather put up with problems in
my current job than have to go through the process of finding
a new one’.
Discussing the findings, Chief Executive Officer of SEEK,
Paul Bassat said, “We are witnessing a power shift in the Australian
employment market in favour of employees. The economy is strong
and employees are taking advantage of that by scanning the
employment landscape for other opportunities and keeping their
options open.”
“The Internet is fuelling this transitory trend because it
provides free access to an enormous range of jobs, and sites
such as seek.com.au will even e-mail job opportunities to individuals
based on their own selection criteria. This is good news for
firms scouting for talent, but it will make it increasingly
difficult to retain good staff”, he said.
When asked to name the factors that would encourage them to
change jobs in the future, 38% of respondents nominated a higher
wage or better package, with males (46%) more likely than females
(29%), to be driven by remuneration.
Promotion/career advancement (24%), curiosity to try something
new (17%) and frustration with the boss or colleagues (10%)
were the next most popular reasons for moving on.
“To be honest, we have been surprised by the number of people
with fulltime jobs in which they are happy who are quite prepared
to move on if circumstances change or if they receive a better
offer. Staff turnover is already a major issue for business
and things aren’t about to get any easier”, Mr Bassat said.
The study also found that Internet access is very high among
fulltime workers, and that job searching on the Internet is
more common than many may think. Overall, 74% of respondents
claim to have access to the Internet, rising to 81% in the
traditionally mobile 25-29 years age group. Among those with
access to the Internet, 32% reported that they have already
searched for a job online.
“The rapid growth in Internet usage in Australia over the
past five years and the importance of employers having a presence
online is reflected in the finding that company websites are
now the single most frequently used source of information for
potential employees”, said Mr Bassat.
“A total of 62% of respondents use the Internet to gather
information about potential employers, compared with 36% who
use word-of-mouth and 22% who use newspapers. In this environment,
it is doubly important for employers to build a presence online
either with their own website or via profiles on recruiter
or employment websites”, he said.

SEEK: WAP Technology Opens Job Market
A new WAP-based service launched today by SEEK Limited (www.seek.com.au)
and Telstra will allow those seeking greener pastures to conduct
industry job searches and email themselves a shortlist using
their WAP-enabled mobile phones.
Announcing the new service, Chief Executive Officer of SEEK
Limited, Paul Bassat said: "New technology is opening
up the job market by facilitating direct communication between
employers and job seekers. WAP technology allows portable access
to the Internet, which is perfect for investigating job opportunities
and shortlisting job vacancies on the run."
From today, job seekers with a Telstra WAP-enabled phone can
conduct job searches on the telstra.com menu based on location,
industry, occupation, and even specific keywords. They can
also review short descriptions of their search results; and
send detailed job information to their email addresses for
further review.
"We are the first employment site in Australia to cater
for job seekers with WAP-enabled mobile phones, but our planning
has focussed on realising business benefits of the new technology
rather than being first to market. What we have developed is
a practical application of this new technology, designed to
help users access our services at any time. We will continue
to watch this space and add new and expanded services as our
users and advertisers request them", Paul said.
"SEEK does not expect WAP to replace the popularity of
standard Internet connection to our site overnight, in fact
our service acts as an extension of the Internet site. We view
WAP technology as a means of broadening the opportunity job
seekers have to consider their employment options. From the
perspective of our advertisers, WAP is another way to get their
message to potential job seekers which means increased potential
reach and more bang for their buck".
Telstra’s General Manager, Wireless Multimedia Programs, Mr
Greg van Mourik said, that Telstra’s aim is to help its customers
access the information and services they need , anywhere, anytime.
Telstra is committed to working with leading edge companies
to develop and deliver timely and relevant applications.
"Telstra is leading the way in the development of WAP
applications that we hope will improve the way we live and
work in the mobile world, and our agreement with Seek Limited
is proof of that," Mr van Mourik said.
Telstra MobileNet WebMode customers will find the SEEK JobSearch
on the telstra.com WAP portal home page, under Money/Finance.

SEEK aquires Top Jobs in Australia
SEEK Limited announced today that it has strengthened its
leadership position in the Australian Internet employment market
by acquiring the Australian business of Top Jobs plc.
Based in the UK and also listed on the NASDAQ, Top Jobs on
the Net was one of the first companies to focus on developing
the potential of the World Wide Web for recruitment services.
Its acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, gives SEEK access
to all registered users and advertisers on the Top Jobs on
the Net Australian database. Visitors to the Top Jobs site
will be directed to www.seek.com.au starting early September.
Announcing the acquisition SEEK Chief Executive Officer Paul
Bassat said: "This acquisition reinforces our position
as Australia's leading Internet employment website. It will
benefit our users by growing the jobs we have available online
and our advertisers will benefit from the greater exposure
due to increased site traffic."
"The industry is ripe for rationalisation and as the
market leader it is only natural that we take advantage of
the opportunities this presents. Acquiring another leading
site in Australia allows us to continue our strategy of growth
both organically and through acquisition."
"Australian employers, recruitment firms and job seekers
are embracing the Internet as a convenient and cost effective
recruitment solution. SEEK Limited is well positioned to benefit
from further rationalisation in the industry", he said.

online and read profiles about all registered organisations.
Volunteer organisations are able to register, post available
positions and manage their recruitment drive any time of the

Matthew Rockman, director of seek.com.au, said "Australia
is a nation of volunteers with ABS statistics revealing around
three million people participate in some voluntary activity
each year. SEEK has state of the art technology and a committed
team anxious to give something back to Australian society.
When we started looking for ways we might do this, it became
pretty obvious SEEK had something unique to offer to all organisations
- as opposed to choosing one or two causes. We are delighted
to be launching the SEEK Volunteer site and making it that
much easier for all Australians to find those organisations
seeking their help".
Ann Liffen, national marketing manager of The Leukaemia Foundation
of Australia said "as we move forward into the technological
age, it's encouraging to note that companies like seek.com.au
are providing an innovative online service which will encourage
volunteerism in Australia. Volunteers are of vital importance
to organisations like The Leukaemia Foundation. They provide
valuable input to all aspects of our work making every dollar
donated go that much further in providing a better quality
of life for leukaemia patients and their families. We applaud
seek.com.au for this initiative."
The project is a joint initiative of Australia's leading employment
website www.seek.com.au, Volunteering Australia and The Boston
Consulting Group. There are two doorways leading to the volunteer
database - www.seek.com.au and www.govolunteer.com.au, launched
recently by Volunteering Australia. This maximises the site's
reach to both nonprofit organisations, likely to be members
of Volunteering Australia, and potential volunteers likely
to be visiting seek.com.au.

SEEK Limited challenges Australians: "What do you
want to be remembered for?"
SEEK Limited has launched a series of three new 15-second TVCs
showcasing real characters realising their full potential
in support of SEEK's latest campaign "What do you want
to be remembered for?".
The campaign, developed by Leonardi BrandHouse in conjunction
with Melbourne advertising guru Ted Horton, was born out of
the advertisements that Horton developed for SEEK Limited in
1999. These original advertisements were SEEK's first venture
into television and proved to be hugely successful. SEEK was
keen to use the success of the original campaign to maintain
the brand awareness generated by the original series.
"The main objective of the new campaign is to use the
previous theme of older Australians sharing their personal
regrets about their working lives and to develop this into
new millennium characters. The new SEEK TVC characters stayed
true to their ambitions, never took 'no' for an answer, and
always grabbed the job and the life they wanted," said
Ted Horton.
The three characters that featured throughout the original
campaign were Dame Margaret Scott, Carl Wood and Sir Archibald
Glenn. The new characters of the millennium campaign are David
Gold, founder of dstore, Diana Williams, founder of Fernwood
Women's Gyms, and Cameron Hines and David Bonighton, co-founders
of Mountain Goat Beer.
Katie May, Marketing Director of SEEK Limited said "Each
of these characters is proud to be remembered for their achievements,
and what SEEK is attempting to make viewers think about is
'what about you? Are you happy with your current situation?
Are you realising your full potential?' We are hoping for the
same cut-through that the original SEEK advertisements created," she
added.

AV-CC launches new services with SEEK
The Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee has launched two
new initiatives in partnership with leading-edge Internet recruitment
service SEEK. These are aimed at improving the services available
for university staff recruitment and also the services provided
to university students through the Graduate Careers Council
of Australia.
In August 1999 the AV-CC recognised the growing importance
of the Internet as an advertising medium and endorsed a project
to develop and promote a single Internet site for employment
advertising in the higher education sector. This project has
been run by Higher Ed Systems, a company wholly owned by the
AV-CC, in partnership with SEEK Limited, Australia’s premier
Internet recruitment company.
According to Tony Skinner, the Chief Executive Officer of
HES, this project will benefit universities by making advertisements
for positions more readily visible to a wider market.
“By using and promoting a single web site for employment in
the higher education sector, we are able to market the sector
as a significant employer not only of academics but also of
skilled professionals in a range of other areas. Obviously,
universities will continue to advertise job vacancies on their
own web sites, but because each site is laid out differently
it can be very time-consuming to search through several sites
to see what positions might be available. By providing a single
portal for Internet recruitment advertising for universities,
we simplify life for the ‘customer’, who is in this case the
potential employee.”
Access to the web site will be made as simple as possible,
with universities being asked to put in place a prominent link
to www.unijob.edu.au from
their own site.
Mr Skinner also pointed out that the project represents a
new direction for HES itself.
“In the past, HES – and its predecessor, UniOn – worked on
the basis of setting up and working with groups of universities
which were funded by membership fees. While this approach did
succeed in delivering services, we are now looking at different
ways of setting up projects which provide benefit to the whole
sector, and the UniJob site is an excellent example of this.”
The alliance between Australia's peak body for graduate employment,
the Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA) and SEEK Campus
is set to improve the ease with which employers looking for
particular graduate skills can be matched with students and
graduates looking for work.
The Executive Director of the GCCA, Roger Bartley, said that
the new matching capacity of the gradlink/SEEK
Campus service would ensure that the GCCA stays at the cutting
edge of recruitment technology. “We developed gradlink (www.gradlink.edu.au)
in 1996, making it Australia's first dedicated graduate careers
information and recruitment website. The recent surge in interest
from employers in utilising the power of the Internet to create
efficiencies in recruitment has led to rapid movements in technology
- and competition - in this area. The GCCA Board has decided
to create an alliance with a market leader in order to offer
improved better services to employers and graduates through gradlink”,
Mr Bartley said.
SEEK Campus and gradlink will remain independent
sites, however SEEK Campus is to handle the gradlink vacancy
advertising service, as well as providing résumé and other
services to gradlink users. The two sites will
also share some branding and content in order to provide a
seamless interface for site users.
In launching the two new services, the Executive Director
of the AV-CC, Stuart Hamilton AO, commented on the huge promotional
and marketing value of such enterprises. “Universities should
support these initiatives,” he said, “and not lose opportunities
for achieving economies of scale and using our market power
which would happen if each pursued its own route and relied
on other providers.”
The two new services are both being launched at functions
in Melbourne (8 June), Sydney (13 June) and Brisbane (14 June).

Yahoo! makes investment in Australia's SEEK Limited
Premier Australian Internet recruiter to provide comprehensive
resources for job seekers on Yahoo! Australia & NZ
Yahoo! Australia & NZ and SEEK Limited today announced that

Limited, Australia's leading online employment site. Under
the terms of the deal, SEEK (www.seek.com.au), will become
the principal supplier of employment listings for Yahoo! Australia & NZ
and will run an extensive marketing campaign targeting Australians
across Yahoo! Australia & NZ (www.yahoo.com.au) and the Yahoo!
global network.
"We're really pleased to be working with SEEK and making
our first investment in an Australian company," said Tony Faure,
managing director, Yahoo! Australia & NZ. "It's a move that
we believe will benefit both companies in terms of audience
and services, and fits with our strategy to offer our users
compelling services in a variety of key areas. One of these
areas is going to be classifieds, and the employment listings
to be provided by SEEK will be our first major step in that
direction."
According to the ANZ Job Series report, there were over 70,000
jobs available online in Australia in February 2000, compared
to the 31,000 jobs advertised in the print medium and SEEK

category. According to survey results from Media Metrix for
the month of February, the company's site attracted 237,000
unique visitors, more than double that of its closest competitor.
Yahoo! Australia & NZ also continues to attract a large number
of Australians, with Media Metrix reporting that the percentage
of the Australian online audience visiting the Yahoo! network
rose from 51% in December to 57% in February.
"In today's world where people change jobs more frequently,
the Internet has quickly become a central place for connecting
job seekers and employers," he said. "By working with SEEK,
which has one of the best online selections of employment opportunities
available in Australia, we'll be able to enhance the job search
process for consumers by providing a really valuable new service."
"We're absolutely delighted about the investment and the
opportunities that arise from working with Yahoo! Australia & NZ," said
Paul Bassat, CEO, SEEK Limited. "Both companies have incredibly
strong brands and services that resonate with the online audience,
and we're very positive about teaming up to bring users together
with the contacts and information they need in their job search.

SEEK Campus Graduates to the Boardroom
SEEK Campus (www. seekcampus.com.au), Australia's leading
independent online employment portal dedicated to the student
and graduate markets, is taking these markets by storm with
a one stop online shop that provides careers information and
employment solutions for students, graduates and employers
in Australia.
SEEK Campus is delivering a unique range of online services,
resources and tools to Australian tertiary students and graduates,
and is proving to be a powerful and cost-effective tool for
employers and recruiters wishing to reach this geographically
disparate market.
The techno-savvy student market is embracing the Internet
as an employment tool, using the medium to research prospective
employers and liaise with recruiters. Now Australian employers
from all areas of business are recognising the value of Internet
employment strategies in supporting their traditional human
resources strategies.
According to SEEK Campus' CEO, Gideon Kline, the Internet
will be the medium of choice for employers and recruiters who
want to communicate with students and graduates, as the traditional
alternatives (graduate handbooks and directories) cannot support
the need for the delivery of time sensitive information and
interactive services.
"The success of the SEEK Campus web site can be attributed to the tailored services
offered to our two key customer groups, employers and users," says Kline. "Our
primary aim is to maximise the value of the online recruitment process for both
of these customer groups, and we now offer a range of interactive services that
cater to the various needs of these segments."
Student Services
Students visiting the SEEK campus web site are invited to
browse job ads from a variety of industries, locations and
disciplines, can arrange to have relevant job advertisements
emailed directly to their desktop, search the directory of
employers to gain vital information about prospective employers
and industries and employ various tools to track and manage
the application process.

Employers and recruitment firms are using the SEEK Campus
web site to enhance their recruitment strategy through a range
of tailored services including job advertisements, company
profiles, a virtual corporate web site within the SEEK Campus
environment and an Application Manager tool, which allows employers
to efficiently track and analyse incoming job applications.
According to Kline, "The SEEK Campus service is completely
customer driven, and we believe that this is why the site is
successful. The feedback we have received from employers, and
the positive response from the student market indicates that
we are well equipped to maintain a solid leadership position
in this field."
Since launching SEEK Campus in February 2000, the site has
received over 30,000 visits, and currently has over 200 graduate
and undergraduate job advertisements listed on the site by
leading companies such as BHP Limited, Boston Consulting Group,
Mallesons Stephen Jacques, Ernst and Young and Mars Limited.
SEEK Campus has also established key alliances with leading
recruitment agencies, government and industry groups, such
as The Graduate Careers Council of Australia, The Institute
of Chartered Accountants in Australia, Law Institute of Victoria
and Asialink.
As for the future, Kline is characteristically committed and
faithful to his market; "until the site caters to the needs
of every student, we are a work in progress. More jobs, more
content, new services."

SEEK Campus - An Online Market Ready to Meet its Maker
SEEK Campus, the newest division of leading online employment
service provider, SEEK Limited, has already shot to the top
of the class. A mere six weeks after launching the service
on the web, SEEK Campus has become Australia's leading independent
online employment portal dedicated specifically to the needs
of student and graduate job seekers and employers.
Located at seekcampus.com.au, SEEK Campus heralds a new era
in the way students and graduates search for information about
companies and jobs, and makes it easy for companies and recruiters
to attract and select the right candidates for the job, every
time.
SEEK Campus delivers a unique range of online services, resources
and tools to Australian tertiary students and recent graduates
and is a powerful and cost-effective tool for employers and
recruiters wishing to reach this geographically disparate and
traditionally hard to reach market.
There are currently over 45 universities around the country
and students spread across over 80 campuses, getting a message
to this market is not easy. Traditional print avenues are not
targeted and are costly for many businesses.
According to CEO of SEEK Campus, Gideon Kline, "The SEEK Campus
service was developed to cater to the specific needs of the
student and graduate employment markets in Australia. By creating
a separate operating team that is dedicated solely to this
market, SEEK has been able to really understand the needs of
the student and graduate job seeker and employer."
"Students are one of the largest user groups on the Internet
today in Australia. With ubiquitous net access at universities
and an exceptional rate of technology literacy, students are
the ideal online community. They just get it. The US experience
shows us a great degree of comfort amongst students using the
web to research jobs and companies and communicate with prospective
employers," he continues.
SEEK Campus has already developed relationships with a large
number of leading global and Australian businesses including
BHP Limited, Boston Consulting Group, Mallesons Stephen Jacques,
Ernst and Young and Mars Limited.
Kline cites the relationships SEEK Campus has established
with leading recruitment agencies, government and industry
groups, such as The Graduate Careers Council of Australia,
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, Law Institute
of Victoria and Asialink as part of the site's winning formula.
"We only do one thing" states Kline, "make it easier, cheaper
and quicker for students and graduates to find employers and
vice versa. If we can do that well, we believe we can enlarge
the pool of job opportunities for students and graduates. To
date, our obsession with aiding recruiters and employers overcome
the barriers of time, distance and cost associated with the
student and graduate recruitment process is paying off."
In only six weeks, SEEK Campus has amassed over 4,000 registered
users and has had over 50,000 visits to the site. Job seekers
can access a vast array of site services including job search
tools, job mail, industry newsletters, employer profiles, the
virtual interviewer and the SEEK Campus panel of careers experts.

SEEK wraps up
SEEK, Australia’s leading online recruitment site, is certainly
proving to be the forerunner in advertising initiatives. SEEK
was the first company to jump onboard the zippy Scooterlites
and it is now leading the way in the newest and biggest advertising
initiative set to hit Australia, Extreme Imaging.
Extreme Imaging involves wrapping a site, in most cases a
building, in a ‘skin’. SEEK has wrapped a branded skin around
its building, creating an enormous sign that covers the third
floor of SEEK’s building in Wellington Street, Windsor. The
skin is wrapped around both the St Kilda Road and Wellington
Street sides of the building.
Recently confirming their position as Australia’s leading
online employment service, according to research conducted
by Internet specialists, IMR Worldwide, the SEEK website is
changing the way Australian job seekers and advertisers communicate,
streamlining the application and selection process.
The specially designed skin, totally covering all windows
in the SEEK office, is transparent from the inside, but opaque
from the outside.
Extreme Imaging is set to really take off in Sydney during
the Olympic Games and with building walls as canvases, Extreme
Imaging certainly makes a statement that can’t be missed.

SEEK site now delivers to the boardroom!
SEEK Limited, Australia’s leading Internet employment service,
has launched a new site at www.seek.com.au, specifically for
Australian executive recruiters and candidates alike.
Aptly named SEEK Executive, the site offers a tailored solution
for executive search borne out of SEEK’s extensive research
into user needs and a commitment to continuous improvement
in their product offering.
Recently confirming their position as Australia’s leading
online employment service, according to research conducted
by Internet specialists, IMR Worldwide, the SEEK website is
changing the way Australian job seekers and advertisers communicate,
streamlining the application and selection process.
"Our web site goes way beyond matching jobs with prospective
employees," says Paul Bassat, SEEK Limited's chief executive
officer. "We are always working on ways to improve our
services, and SEEK Executive demonstrates how we have listened
to our users and our advertisers and developed a product entirely
suitable to this distinct segment of the market" he continued.
"We recognise that both recruiter and candidate needs
evolve as they progress through the career lifecycle. The SEEK
Executive site caters specifically to the needs of experienced
professionals seeking more senior appointments, as will our
newly launched SEEK Campus site for recent and soon-to-be graduates" he
added.
SEEK Executive is an exclusive zone designed for experienced
executives earning greater than $80,000 per annum with management
responsibility. Extensive market research revealed that time
poor executives have unique needs and preferences with confidentiality,
relevancy and ease of use named as key ‘buying criteria’ for
this segment. Thus, SEEK Executive was created to provide this
selective audience with genuinely relevant positions, content
and tools for career advancement and as a result, advertisers
now have a targeted area to communicate with this hard to reach
audience, a first in online employment.
Key partnerships have been formed with leading management
consultancies such as Booz Allen & Hamilton and McKinsey & Company
and the Harvard Business School to deliver relevant content
to this market. Future partnerships and resources will continue
to focus on the unique attributes of the executive experience.

Upgraded SEEK site delivers superior service
Today, SEEK Limited, Australia’s number one Internet-only
employment service, launched a redesigned site at both www.seek.com.au
and www.seek.co.nz which offers users a multitude of new benefits.
The upgrade comes as a result of SEEK’s extensive research
into user needs and a commitment to continuous improvement
in their product offering.
Recently named the sixth best-known Internet brand in the
country by independent Internet consulting firm www.consult,
the SEEK web site is changing the way Australian job seekers
and advertisers communicate, streamlining the application and
communication process.
"Our web site goes way beyond matching jobs with prospective
employees," says Paul Bassat, SEEK Limited’s chief executive
officer. "We are always working on ways to improve our
services, and the new site demonstrates how we have listened
to our users and developed the features likely to be most beneficial
to them. Next, we will be spending a considerable amount of
time listening to our advertisers and tackle that side of the
site" he added.
The SEEK site boasts the following improvements:
- Faster Downloads and Channels
- SEEK’s download time on key pages will now be significantly
faster. SEEK is also moving to a new channel structure in
response to specific user group’s needs, for example SEEK
Executive and SEEK Campus, two zones soon to be launched.
Jobs Total
SEEK’s users said that this feature was very important to them,
so SEEK now publishes the total number of jobs listed on its
homepage. SEEK is the first player in the Australian market
to broadcast this figure as a dynamic number with up to the
minute accuracy. A clear indication of who’s winning the volume
war.
Apply Online
In three easy steps users can apply online with their preferred
resume and cover letter. This is now the most straightforward
feature of the www.seek.com.au site.
Application Tracker
This is a key new feature of the SEEK site. The Application
Tracker is a tool which organises and displays all the details
of online applications. At a glance, users can view each
job applied for, date applied, details of attachments and
even add their own comments. SEEK expects the Application
Tracker to quickly become one of the site’s most popular
features.
My Resume
Exclusive to SEEK, this is a very easy-to-use resume builder,
which offers a choice of three layout options, plus print
capabilities. This feature will also benefit advertisers,
who can view all job applications in the same layouts.

looking to fill a position. Submit your e-mail address along

which you are hoping to enter and personal questions about

will also give you feedback about your responses. Fortunately,
the Virtual Interviewer won’t see if you break out in a cold
sweat or fumble and swear, so make friends with VI and you
will be on your way to a new job.
After recently celebrating its 2nd birthday, SEEK has expanded
enormously and now has offices throughout Australia and NZ.
With a young, enthusiastic and innovative group of people behind
the scenes, you won’t be left in the dark ages - no more vinyls
or wireless! You will definitely find success joining this
